MAPSNet is a cloud-based program developed by IBP to allow MAPS station operators to import, verify, and edit bird banding data (including non-MAPS data). Operators can also download Excel files of the cleaned data for their records and download formatted files that can be imported into the Banding Offices' Bander Portal. Operators will also soon be able to download their breeding status lists for use in the upcoming MAPS season. MAPSNet was introduced after the 2024 MAPS season and replaced the previous downloadable software, MAPSPROG.
MAPSNet utilizes look-up tables from the Second Edition of Peter Pyle's Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part 1. If you note any inconsistencies, please reach out to
Danielle Kaschube
Where to find MAPSNet
MAPSNet can be found on the
MAPSNet website. You will need a password that is associated with your email and station before you can log in. For now, you must request that password from

Links for entering data into an Excel or Google Sheets:
The banding, effort, and breeding status data are pulled into MAPSNet simultaneously, and the files must be in the correct structure or they will not upload. We have provided the data entry templates in two platforms, so you can choose Excel or Google Sheets. These templates should be used to ensure the correct structure and headers so the files will import properly into MAPSNet. After data entry is complete for either platform, you will need to save each of the three data types as comma-separated (CSV) files for import into MAPSNet. Notes and instructions on data entry can be found here:
Data entry instructions.
You can download:
The
Excel data entry template here:
Excel data entry template.
The
Google Sheets version here:
Google Sheets data entry template. To use the
Google template, you will need to "Make a copy" from the "File" menu before you can begin data entry. To create the CSV files from the Google template, choose "File" -> "Download" -> "Comma Separated Values (.csv)"
Examples of the filled templates in both platforms can be found at:
Excel or
Google Sheets.
