IBP biologist and "master of the molt" Peter Pyle frequently publishes in the American Birding Association's Birding magazine. In the August 2019 issue of Birding, Peter tells the delightful story of how his fascination with the Sanderlings at his new local birding patch got him contemplating their molt.
Why had he never seen Sanderlings in their orange-headed breeding plumage on central California beaches in the spring? Armed with his digital camera, he set off to find out and discovered something new about the Sanderling's molting strategy.
